Student Success Statement
“Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.”
Margaret Thatcher
Reflection:
I think that she is trying to say that when you have a clear conscience you radiate pride and just have higher self-esteem than others because you aren't like them. I agree with this quote because once you have disciplined yourself enough that you never choose the wrong you live worry free. One example of this may be a student. When the student is starting out in school and he or she starts knowing how to manage their behavior and finish their work instead of goofing off then that child feels very proud of themselves that they have mastered the art of discipline and will be great students the rest of their school experience because usually those who don’t know how to behave get frustrated and give up. Once they give up they will fall behind when they finally want to be better.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 3
Brad MacGowan of the Career Center at Newton North High School in Massachusetts, think that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken in responsibly. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,” he says. “In most cases, you can acquire a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences.” In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you.
School Comes First
Schoolwork, including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top priority. MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work, “If you are running through assignments…or not studying enough for tests because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time-consuming job.

“What you are will show in what you do.”
Thomas A. Edison
Reflection:
Thomas Edison is saying in this quote that actions speak louder than words and you actions say a lot about your character. I agree with this quote because it is true. You can promise many things but in the end, if those promises were in vain then people will see you as undependable. You can also say that you are honest and kind but if you lie, people will not believe anything you say anymore and your voice just lacks any meaning to them.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 2

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 2
Voicing your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. It can also help you judge whether you can do both—work and study—successfully. To help answer this question, ask yourself:
·      Am I an organized person?
·      What kind of study habits do I have?
·      Do I make good use of my available time?
·      Will I be able to manage my schedule efficiently if I take on a part-time job?
Think about the pros and cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment time management and responsibility— and of course, handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the time that you have for sleeping, studying and socializing.

Reflection

Summary:
Two grandparents in Dayton locked their 3 year old granddaughter in the bathroom for six years. They only let her out to go to school. She would walk out of the bathroom in the morning to go to school and come back after school and go back in the bathroom. She was not fed well either, her meals were "inconsistent at best". She only had a fold up cot and a blanket to sleep on. Dayton Sgt. Larry Tolpin said "living conditions were deplorable." The girl is now a 9 year old fourth grader. The girl is the biological maternal granddaughter and the grandparents have had custody of her and her brother since 2004. Their reason for locking her up was to discipline her since they though she wasn't maturing fast enough.
Reflection:
What I think about this story is that what the grandparents did to the little girl was horrible. They deserve all the jail time they get because they have damaged her. When she should have been playing with other kids from her block she was stuck inside a bathroom. Not only was she stuck in there for 6 years but she did not have the proper nutrition. They probably stunted her growth. All in all what the grandparents did is detestable and should be punished.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 1

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 1

Like many high school students, you may want—or need—to work part time. Working takes a lot of time and energy, though, so before getting a job, make sure that you think about your ability to handle both work and your education.
Important Considerations
You have to weigh a number of factors when deciding whether to take on a part-time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible, so you can figure out what choice makes the most sense for you.
Schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss the idea of working. Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you’re seeking.

“If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true do not say it.”
Marcus Aurelius
Roman Emperor from 161 AD to 180 AD
Reflection:
I think he is trying to say that we must all live honorable and respectable lives. If we know for a fact that action is wrong and will hurt others we should not do it. If something is not true we should not say it because that small fib can have large consequences. In order to be respected anywhere we need to earn that respect by being righteous and honest. Those two traits will get you anywhere in life.

“In any moment of decision, the best thing to do is the right thing.”
Theodore Roosevelt
Reflection:
He is trying to say that even when you are under pressure you should always do the right thing. I agree with this statement because any sort of pressure should not be a deciding factor. People say that they make the worst decisions under pressure but they usually choose what will benefit them the most even if it is not the right thing. These decisions usually backfire because they are made in haste and are not thought through. An example of this could be if your friends invite you to a party at last minute but you have to sneak out of the house to go. Your friends push you to make a fast decision because they want you to come with them. Most people would go to the party because they want to have fun. That backfires because their parents could find out and they will be grounded for a really long time. They had fun for a little bit but that had lasting consequences.

Part 5
The Arts
Research indicates that students who participate in the arts often do better in school and on standardized tests. The arts help you recognize patterns, discern differences and similarities, and exercise your mind in unique ways, often outside a traditional classroom setting.
Many colleges require or recommend one or two semesters in the arts. Good choices include studio art, dance, music, and drama. Many students have talents and extraordinary abilities in the arts. Students should look within their own repertoire of talents and identify their artistic abilities and take college classes to develop their talents.
Advanced Placement Program® (AP®)
To be sure you are ready to take on college-level work, enroll in the most challenging courses you can take in high school, such as honors or AP courses. Research consistently shows that students who score 3.0 or higher on an AP exam typically experience greater academic success and college graduation rates than students who don’t take AP.

Work hard in your righteous pursuits, and you will reap the benefits of self-fulfillment and job satisfaction. Don’t take shortcuts just to “get BY,” instead, take challenging and difficult roads (courses) and reach higher mountain peaks and achievement.

“To know what is right and not do it us the worst kind of cowardice”
Confucius
Reflection:
He is saying that the worst cowards are those who know that they should do something because it is the right thing to do. They do not stand up for what they believe in and therefore they are cowardly to stand up to those who are in the wrong. Unlike cowards, the brave always make their stand and will back up anything they have said. They think before they act or say so therefore they have evidence to support what they are saying. All the cowards will back down at a sign of a verbal confrontation because they know they are wrong or think they cannot win because they are not a majority and therefore don’t matter. Those who are not cowards are the people who are doing well in school because they want to go to college. They know that high school is temporary so what you did here or who you fought won’t matter. You might still remember it but it will not set a bright future for you. On the other hand if you go to college and graduate you are set for the rest of your life.

Selecting Your Courses
Part 4
Social Studies
You can better understand local and world events that are happening now by studying the culture and history that has shaped them. Here is a suggested course plan:
·      U.S History (two semesters)
·      U.S Government (one semester)
·      World history or geography (one semester)
·      One additional semester in the above or other areas
Foreign Languages
Solid foreign language study shows colleges you’re willing to stretch beyond the basics. Many colleges require at least two years of study in the same foreign language, some prefer more.
Learning a foreign language can be challenging but is exciting. Repetition is the key to learning a language, and having conversations with others speaking the same language is the best way to learn this new language. Repetition in a fun way will build your skills thoroughly as you seek to master new languages.

“Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the (3) magic keys to living your life with integrity.”
W. Clement Stone
Reflection:
That person is saying that you need to be able to act when it is appropriate. I agree with this statement because people should all live honest lives to be remembered as good people. When you can say no to something that is wrong or that you do not want to do you are being true to yourself and that will always make you the better person. When you choose to do the right thing you are setting yourself up for success. When you can stand behind what you have said or done you are being honest and people will respect you for being truthful and brave. One example would be saying no to any sort of bad peer pressure. When your friends tell you to do something that you decide is bad or unhealthy and you say no you are being brave and risking a friendship but then again they are telling you to do something bad so they weren’t really your friends in the first place.

Selecting Your Courses

Science
Science teaches you to think analytically and apply theories to reality. Colleges want to see that you’ve taken at least three years of laboratory sciences. A good combination includes two semesters of the following courses:
·      Biology
·      Chemistry or physics
·      Earth/space science
More competitive schools expect you to take four years of lab science courses. You can add two semesters in one of the following subjects:
·      Chemistry or physics (the science you didn’t already study)
·      Advanced biology
·      Advanced chemistry
·      Advanced physics

Man Returns Stolen Cash To Seattle, Washington Sears 60 Years Later
In this story the man returned aprox. 100 dollars back to the sears that he had stolen in the 40's. He felt so bad that he had stolen and the thought ate at his conscience for 60 years. He finally decided to to return the money because he couldn't take the bad thoughts that were running through his mind. He had only taken around 20-30 but felt that bad that he had taken it in the first place so he decided to give more to put into the theft account.

Selecting Your Courses
Part 2
The following subjects and classes are standard fare for success in high school and beyond, whether you plan to attend a four-year or two-year college.
English (Language Arts)
Take English every year. Traditional courses, such as American and English Literature, help you improve your writing skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Math
You need algebra and geometry to succeed in college entrance exams and in college math classes—and in many careers. Take them early in. That way, you’ll be able to enrolein advanced science and math in high school, and show colleges you’re ready for higher level work.
Most colleges look for students who have taken three years of math in high school. The more competitive ones require or recommend four years. Each school has its own program, but some of the courses that are typically offered are:
·    Algebra I
·    Algebra II
·    Geometry
·    Trigonometry
·    Calculus

'Tis the Set of the Sail
Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1916
But every mind there openeth,
A way, and a way, and away.
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.

But every man there openeth,
A highway and a low,
And in every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.

One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
‘Tis the set of the sails,
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
And the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
‘Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

Selecting Your Courses
Recommended Classes for College Success
Part 1

The academic right of your high school is an important factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school courses schedule as a blueprint of your education. They’re looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in college.
To create that foundation, take at least five solid academic classes every semester. Start with the basics and then move on to advanced courses. Challenging yourself is a part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm grasp of the fundamentals before going on to more advanced work.

“A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.”
Thomas Carlyle
Reflection:
He is trying to say that a person should have a goal they want to accomplish in life so they have meaning. A person that has no goals or interests just goes through life wandering with no purpose and will eventually sink like a ship without a rudder. This has happened many times where people without purpose eventually go down a wrong path and they do many bad things. The ship could also symbolize that person’s life. When it has no rudder it might go where the wind takes it and when that happens it lands somewhere unknown that can be dangerous.

The Power of Study Groups
Part 4
Getting the Most of a Session
Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:
·      Decide what you’re doing in advance.
·      Prepare for the sessions, so you make the most of your time together.
·      Take turns teaching to reinforce your own knowledge.
·      Stick to the session topic.
By supplementing your individual study with a study group, you can reinforce what you've learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends, (they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

The Power of Study Groups
Part 3
Guidelines for Getting a Group Together
Here are some guidelines for creating and running a study group: How many? Create a group of four to six people. In a larger group, it’s easy for someone to get lest out and smaller groups can too easily get off track.
Who? Pick classmates who seem to share your interest in doing well academically. Look for people who stay alert in class, take notes, ask questions, and respond to the teacher’s questions. Include someone who understands the material better than you and can explain the concepts and someone who doesn't understand it as well, to whom you can explain the material.
Where? Hold study group sessions in a place that is free of distractions and that has room to spread out books and notes. How long? Meet for no more than two to three hours at a time. Having a time limit helps the group focus. If you know you only have an hour, you’re more likely to stay on task.
When? Try to meet regularly, on the same day and time each week. Treating the study session as you would other activities helps you to keep a schedule and ensures that everyone attends.

The Power of Study Groups
Part 2
The Benefits of Study Groups
Group study offers other advantages in addition to gaining a deeper understanding of class material. These include the opportunity to: Reinforce note-taking. If your AP® Biology notes are unclear, you can ask a member of your study group to help you fill the gaps. Share talents. Each person brings different strengths, such as organizational skills, the ability to stick to a task or capacity for memorization.
Cover more ground. Group members may be able to solve a calculus problem together that none would have solved alone.
Benefit from a support system. Members often have common goals, such as good grades. Each person’s work affects the other members, which results in making members supportive of one another.
Socialize. It’s more fun to study with others; the give-and-take makes it more interesting. And because it’s more fun, you spend more time studying.

“In life as in football, you won’t go far, unless you know where the goalposts are”
Arnold Glasgow
Reflection:
In this quote the speaker is talking about metaphorical goalposts. They symbolize your goals in life. He is saying that if you don’t know where your life is heading then you will never get there and end up someplace that is not pleasant. I agree with this statement because since you are in school you should know what kind of adult life you want. It should be there that you prepare yourself for what lies ahead because education can get you far in life. If you don’t have a good education you will most likely be forced to work in manual labor to get some money. Those with a good education may stay up late but they always have change in their environment so it is not always tedious. You should know where you want your life to be headed in because when you don’t care you will end up somewhere you might regret.

        The Power of Study Groups
Part 1
Working Together Helps Everyone
You may have noticed that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it better yourself. This happens because when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.
The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:
·      Think out loud.
·      Share ideas.
·      Learn from one another.
In an effective study group, you and other students hash out lesson materials together—explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from another’s—and in the process, you most likely learn more than you would have studying by yourself.
