“Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow”
Robert Kiyosaki
Reflection:
I agree with this statement because all our actions have consequences. They may not be necessarily bad but if you did bad then sooner or later there will be bad consequences. What you decide to do tomorrow will affect what you do tomorrow so it is important to remember to always choose the right.

Review
It is a proven technique to sharpen your study skills.
In college, you’ll be required to do lots of reading. You’ll often have to complete reading assignments in several different books for several different courses at the same time.
SQ3R helps make reading and studying purposeful and effective, so that you use your time efficiently. Here’s how this strategy works.
Survey
Let’s say your assignment is to read one chapter. First, get an idea of what the chapter is about by reviewing the highlights:
·      Read the title, heading and subheadings
·      Notice words that are italicized or bold
·      Look at charts, graphs, pictures, maps and other visual material
·      Read captions
·      Read the very beginning and the end of the chapter

NEVER
“There is no justification ever for choosing any part of what you know to be evil.”
                                                      Ayn Rand
Reflection:
I agree with this statement because you should not try to justify your actions if they are wrong. If you think that what you did was right then stand behind your actions. You should choose the right every day. There should never be a day when you decide to do wrong.

Reading
5 Tips for Success
Tip 5
Tip 5: Keep a List of Questions
When you feel confused about something you’re reading write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, teachers create assignments; they’re read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions you teachers can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions developed and asked by the learner.
Asking questions to yourself, to the teacher, and to others, is a great learning method. When you cease to ask questions, you cease to exist to a great extent. Read actively by silently asking questions as you read. Questioning immerses you into the material you are reading and therefore will expand you mental capacities more than almost anything else.
The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge and making the most of your education. So pick up a book… and a pen

“When I was teaching basketball, I urged my players to try their hardest to improve on the very day, to make practice a masterpiece.
This rule is even more important in life than in basketball. You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only the will you be able to approach being the best you can be. It begins by trying to make each day count and knowing you can never make up for the lost day.”

John Wooden
Reflection:
I think that he is trying to say that every day you should struggle getting towards what you want because if you are not struggling you are probably not going to get there when you want to. I agree with this statement because just like in any skill, to mature yourself or your skill you need to work hard every day. When you are still in school and more in high school you need to do your best in order to get into the college of your dreams. Even in college you still struggle to maintain good grades to graduate.

5 Tips for Success
Tips 3-4
Tip 3: Do Research
Literary critics have written vast numbers of analytical and critical pieces in countless books. If you’re having trouble understanding a particular text, do some research and see what knowledgeable sources have to say about it. In addition to increasing your comprehension, you’ll also be showing some initiative, something teachers always like to see. Always use legitimate and scholarly sources, not condensed study guides. Going the extra mile in your research elevates your achievement 10-fold.
Tip 4: Use a Dictionary
Make sure you have access to a dictionary when you’re reading. You can often figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using context clues, but sometimes you can’t. Rather than simply skipping over the words you don’t know, take the time to look them up. The results are well worth the effort. You comprehension will increase greatly, and you’ll build you vocabulary at the same time.

“Every time I’ve done something that doesn’t feel right, it’s ended up not being right.”
Mario Cuomo
Reflection:
I think that he is saying to follow your gut. I agree with this statement because anything that is wrong should never feel right. You are not made like that. For example, when a teenager does their first bad thing they always are weary of doing it because they know there could be bad consequences. That is their conscience telling them to not do it. They don’t listen so as they do bad things more frequently their conscience quiets down because they won’t listen.

Reading
5 Tips for Success
Reading and writing go hand in hand. The better you understand a text, the more likely you are to successfully communicate your thoughts about it in writing. So it’s important to develop strong skills in both areas. With that in mind, here’s how to improve your reading comprehension.
Tips 1-2
Tip 1: Annotate
Be an active member. Instead of passively reading a text, take notes about important story elements, key factual information and significant ideas in the text.
Tip 2: Note The Author’s Writing Style
Every author writes with a purpose, using deliberate methods to successfully relate specific information to the audience. When you’re reading, look for patterns in the author’s writing. For example, you may notice repetition of key words, phrases, or symbols –or the use of a distinct type of sentence structure. Authors employ these writing strategies to help readers comprehend a central argument or theme, so be sure to explore how these techniques create meaning.

3. Set Attainable Goals
If you’re having trouble writing a 25-page paper for class because it seems like such a big job, don’t focus on that final number. Break the paper down and consider each section of your paper individually. You can handle any project in small chunks.
4. Find a Social Support Network
Create a group of people around you who want to help you succeed. Mentor can be teachers or family friends who can give you guidance and help you develop new skills. Counselors can help you with planning your courses and starting to explore colleges. You can also reach out to friends and peers who can motivate you by listening and sharing ideas.
5. Acknowledge Your Accomplishments
Give yourself a quick reward when you complete an assignment or task. Take a walk, send an email, get a snack. Then move on to the next project.

5 Tips for Staying Motivated

5 Tips for Staying Motivated
Tips 1-2
To succeed in high school and college, you have to do your best at all times. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, even when you really acre about the work you’re doing. Here are five ways to stay on the right track.
1. Focus on High-Impact Activities
They key to success in school is staying focused on your course work. Make a list to get an overall picture of your workload before you start to tackles any of it. Then, make a plan. Although it’s tempting to do the simplest assignments first, those that take more time and effort to accomplish are probably the ones that you’ll learn the most from.
To determine what the priorities are, rank your assignments in the order of important. The rearrange your time and devote more energy towards those that have the greatest impact on your course work and grades. For example, even though all homework assignments are important, studying for a misterm exam takes priority over writing a paragraph for English class. As you complete each task, think of it as another step on your way to college success.
2. Create New Challenges
Changing your approach can help you stay interested in what you’re doing. If you’ve been given an assignment similar to one you’ve done in the past, think about it in a different way. If you wrote an essay for a creative writing assignment last year, try a poem this time. For book reports, pick a history book instead of another biography.

Reflection:
I think that he means that there should be no reason why you do not do what is right. I agree with this quote because when you practice doing the right it will become a habit and you will have a clear conscience. There are many pros to doing what is right you will never find any bad long term consequences of choosing the right.

Take Control of Homework Part 3

So It Doesn’t Control You
Part 3
Take Advantage of Any Free Time
If you have a study period or a long bus ride, use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. Flash cards are a great learning tool.. They are easy to make, easy to handle, and are a marvelous tool to help you learn and remember anything. Punch a hole in the upper left corner of each index card and connect the stack of your flash cards with a ring. Then the cards are bound and not flopping around. Flash cards bound like this act like a small book with pages. You can even have separate ringed stacks for each subject. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO REMEMBER, OUT IT ON A CARD.
Study With a friend
Get together with friends and classmates to quiz each other, compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joining a study group.
Communicate
If you have concerns about the amount or type of homework you have, you may want to talk to your family, teachers, and counselor. They can help you understand how much time you need to allot for homework and how to manage your tasks.

Celebrate Your Achievements
Reward yourself for hitting milestones or doing something well.

“Be always sure you’re right, then go ahead.”

Reflection:
I think that he means that you should think before you act. I agree with this because a bad reaction can have severe consequences. You should always think clearly about the possible consequences. When you are not sure about something don’t do it because even though it might be the right thing to do now it might not be a lasting fix to problems.

Take Control of Your Homework Part 2

Take Control Your Homework

Part 2
Keep Things in Perspective
Know how much weight each assignment or test carries, and use your time accordingly. Don’t waste time, be wise and smart. Doing the most important things first is being wise and smart.
Get More Involved
Keep your mind from wandering by taking notes, underlining sections, discussing topics with others or relating homework to something you’re studying in another class. Learn actively and not passively. Be anxiously engaged in your studies and you will have a great experience. Demonstrate a good attitude toward hoe assignments, and you will begin to love doing it.
Organize Information
People process information in different ways. Some people like to draw pictures or charts to digest information, others prefer to read out loud or make detailed outlines. Try to find methods that work best for you. Ask your teacher for recommendations if you’re having trouble.

I agree with this quote because in the end when you are gone the only things that will be remembered is what kind of impact you left with people. Take Control of Homework Part 1

Take Control of Homework
So It Doesn’t Control You
Part 1
Although very few students love homework, it does serve a purpose. Homework helps you:
·      Reinforce what you’ve learned during the day.
·      Build study habits that are essential in college.
·      Prepare for your classes.
·      Get a sense of progress.
Here are some tips to help you deal with homework more efficiently.
Set the Mood
Create a good study area with everything you need (for example, a calculator). If you don’t have a quiet place at home, try your school or local library.
Know Where to Begin
Make a list of everything you need to do, and note all deadlines. Do the more difficult homework first, so you don’t have to face them at the end.
Study at the Same Time Every Day
Even if you don’t have homework every night, use the time to review notes. If sitting down to work is part of your normal routine, you’ll approach it with less dread. Also, you’ll become a pro at using time productively.

“I think it better to right, even I few suffer in doing so, than to incur the reproach of our consciences and posterity.”
Robert E. Lee
Reflection:
I think that he would rather do the right thing now even if it may hurt for a little than to be frightened of his own conscience and have to experience regret. I agree with him because when it hurts when you do the right thing it is because people are mad at you. That bitterness is external but you are at peace so it doesn’t hurt. When your conscience is hurting you, you can’t escape your thoughts so it hurts more and longer.

Note-Taking Strategies
For Review
Once you’ve done all of the above, you’ll find you’ve created your own personalized study guide. Cover the main sections of the page and use the key words and questions in the lest margin as a quiz.
Stick to it
Review your notes the day you take them and all your notes once a week. That way, you won’t need to study as much when it’s test time.
You’ve been doing the work all along.
Try out the Cornell Notes system, but if it doesn’t work for you, experiment with other methods. Ask your classmates how they take notes or ask the teacher for advice. Taking good notes requires practice, like any other skill. And the more you work at it now, the more prepared you’ll be to take notes in college.

Sherlock

Sherlock
The show Sherlock is a modern twist of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books of Sherlock Holmes. It is produced by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss who also plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's brother. The show takes place in 21st century London, but is filmed in Cardiff, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as John Watson. The majority of the episodes follow the plotline of the books but like I said have a modern twist. With the help of technology Sherlock usually finishes the cases faster.

In season one Sherlock meets John Watson and the two decide to rent a flat together. John is a doctor that was in war and at the time had been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress disorder. After staying with Sherlock he started coming along on the cases to give some medical help. After some time the limp that was associated with his PTSD was gone. It turned out he missed the adrenaline from the war and like a drug he has experienced some sort of withdrawal. As they start solving more crimes, John writes about them in his blog. The blog becomes really popular and Sherlock is continuously getting seek to help in police cases that otherwise would have gone cold. Then a nemesis comes along. He is Jim Moriarty and just like Sherlock he gets bored and decides to give Sherlock crimes to solve. But many innocent bystanders get hurt along the way. Sherlock is given time in which he has to solve the crime to help those innocent people.

By season two he meets Irene Adler. She is known by Sherlock as "the woman". She tries to seek help from the Royal family by blackmailing them for support. She has incriminating pictures in her phone that Sherlock must retrieve for the safety of the country. In the meanwhile she flirts with him to help her understand a code of numbers that could bring down the government. She knows she has to keep the information in the phone safe so she adds explosives that will detonate if the phone is tampered with. In the end, Sherlock figures out her phone password and she runs away.
Reflection/Summary:
Tony Farmer was one of the most highly recruited basketball players in Ohio. But he recently received a three year sentence. He received his sentence for kidnapping his girlfriend. He was stunned as the sentence since I guess in his mind it wasn't a big deal. He collapsed at the shock of the news. I think that the sentence was appropriate  I think that his reaction was understandable but it was not correct since what he did was really wrong. He was only eighteen years old when he received the sentence and will be there until he is 21. He was almost going to college and in those three years he could have been almost done with his career.     To that girl the time in prison will seem minimal compared to the terror of the kidnapping. To him those three years will seem eternal and I hope he uses that time to reflect upon his action and where he want to go in life.

After Class
As soon as class ends, review your notes and fill in the blanks. Underline, highlight, and use symbols to sort through the information. If you don’t understand something, get help from your teacher or classmates.
After you’ve reviewed all your notes from class, in the left-handed area of the page write down key words and questions your teacher might ask on a test.
At the bottom of each page, write a summary of the notes. This helps you digest what you’ve learned. It also improves your memory of the material for the long term and for tests down the road.

My Chemical Romance

My favorite band is My Chemical Romance. They were an alternative rock band hailing from New Jersey. They give a very positive message to teenagers through their music. In many interviews they have stated that they wanted to save kid's lives. They have accomplished that over the band's span of 12 years.

The band started when the singer Gerard Way saw the 9/11 attacks. He was a recent graduate from the School of Visual Arts in New York and at the time was an intern for the Cartoon Network. He was commuting to work when he saw that happen. He had very deep thoughts about where he thought his life was going and what kind of an impact he was doing. He thought that what he was doing was not enough. When he got home he wrote the song "Skylines and Turnstiles". He called one of his high school friends to see of he wanted to join. Matt Pelissier jumped at the opportunity to start a band. Gerard then called someone who knew who to play guitar because he couldn't sing and pay guitar at the same time. Ray Toro was the first one to go and their lead guitarist. At the time Ray wasn't doing anything either and he loved to play guitar but Gerard chose him because he was to best one around. Gerard's little brother Mikey came soon afterwards. Mikey became their bassist.

With this lineup they started performing at local bars and parties and got a decent following from friends and fellow bands. Mikey was an intern at a local record label Eyeball Records and he helped the band get noticed by them. They were signed pretty quickly considering they were a pretty new band. That is where they met their 5th member Frank Iero. Frank was in a band called Pencey Prep that was in the same label as them but after the band's splitting the band decided to bring him along as the rhythm guitarist. The band had already started recording their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love so Frank is only heard on 2 tracks. They toured to a couple of places in support of that album before they caught the attention of major record label Reprise records. The band was getting pursue by many of them but what made Reprise stand out was that they gave the band liberty with their music. They would let the band make music that they liked not music that would sell.

Not long after being signed to Reprise Records and them starting to record their new album that tragedy struck. Gerard and Mikey's grandma passed away and her death changed the direction of the album. All were really sad in her passing since she was a vital role in helping the band be where they were. One of the songs on the album was made in her honor. "Helena" in Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is about the passing of a loved one but instead of being forever on grief one should celebrate the impact they had on your life. Their album was a success selling over 24,000 records in the first week, twice as much as their debut sold in its lifetime.

“He listens well who takes notes.”
Dante Alighieri
Reflection:
I think that he saying that it is not enough to listen put you also have to know what the person is saying. By knowing what the person is saying you will be able to write down the most important facts. I agree with this because when writing down notes the best way to memorize them is if you understand what is being said to you and you being able to write it down in your own words. If you can do that it means you are a great listener.

During class
One approach that has been proven effective is called the Cornell Note-Taking System. Here are some of its methods.
Start by using the main section of your page to take down your notes during class. Be sure to leave space on the left side of the page and the bottom. Things to keep in mind:
1.   Get the speaker’s main points. Don’t write down every word you hear.
2.   Leave blanks in your notes to add explanations later.
3.   Organize as you write. Pay attention to cues such as repetition and emphasis.
4.   Indicate main and supporting points as you go.
5.   Jot down key vocabulary, important facts and formulas.
6.   Ask questions. If you’re confused, it’s better to ask while the material is fresh in your mind.

“Tell me what is right and I will fight for it.”
Woodrow Wilson

Reflection:
I think that when he says fight he means defend. He doesn’t mean with punches either but with words. I agree with this quote and this philosophy because one strong dedicated person is stronger than a group of 10 people. When you know what is right or want what is right you have to fight for it because others may not want the same and may try to stop you. If they managed to stop you that means you did not give it your best. A strong, dedicated, and loyal minority will always defeat those who stand in their way of doing what is right.

Distance Education: Is a Virtual Classroom for You?
Part 4 of 4
Emphasis on the Written Word
Most of the communication, as well as the course work, in distance-learning classes is written. That’s a plus, because the focus on the written word gives you the opportunity to develop as a writer – and strong writing skills are essential to academic success. However, if writing is a serious weakness for you, virtual learning may not be the best educational option until you improve you skills.  Yes, most of distance education is the written word; therefore you need to be a good reader, love to read, and love writing also. Most of your assignments will be written and submitted to the instructor in the written format. Your penmanship needs to be excellent, spelling great, sentence structure above average, vocabulary extraordinary. You need to have online access with reliable equipment. If your Internet communications at home isn't working, you can't do online education from home and will need to go someplace where you do have access to the Internet.
Decide Whether It’s Right for You
Distance education isn't for everyone, but it just might be for you. You really should seek it out and give it a try. You never know until you try. You might even fall in love with distance education. While distance education may be the perfect alternative for some students, it’s not the right choice for everyone. So carefully consider your unique needs and interests and give distance education a try; then decide if it is right for you.

Reflection:
I think that he is trying to say that if you want things to be better in the future you should do something about it now. I agree with this quote because living in the past will only make your present worse. Not only will you be regretful of things that you have done but you will not keep a tight grasp on the present and before you know it you are much older with nowhere to go.

Challenging Aspects of Distance Education
·     Lack of in-person interaction. Some educators agree that both teacher-student and student-student contact are essential to learning. In a distance-learning classroom, you may be able to participate in class discussions online in chat rooms, message boards or Web conferences – but it’s not the same as being with other students in a classroom.
·     Different levels of quality: Many distance-education programs supply an excellent learning experience, but others may not. Research any program before signing up to make sure it’s rigorous enough. If you are choosing your own program, look into its accreditation before enrolling.
·     The need to self-start: Distance education lets you make your own schedules. If you have a hard time getting motivated, this might not be the ideal educational setting for you.

Positive Aspects of Distance Education
Independence and time management: Taking courses online lets you hone your ability to work on your own. You also gain experience in managing your time efficiently.
A flexible schedule: Schools can only provide a certain number of class periods in a single school day, and there may not be enough time for you to take everything you want. Because distance education lets you take classes outside regular school hours, it gives you the flexibility to explore all your areas of interest.
Advanced and specialized classes: Some schools can’t provide advanced or specialized classes. Distance education gives you the chanced to gain experience in areas that would otherwise remain out of reach.
